Expungement is the process of going to court to ask a judge to seal a court record. There are many reasons to ask for an expungement, but many people ask for an expungement after they have been denied a job, housing, or a professional license because of their criminal record.

If you have a criminal court case that was dismissed, then you still have a public criminal record that says you were charged with a crime and that your charge was later dismissed. Even if your arrest and conviction happened 10 or more years ago, these records are still viewable by the public and remain on your record unless sealed by law or court order.
